Preventing Freelancer Burnout: Work-Life Boundaries When Working from Home

When your office is inside your home, the risk isn’t that you won’t work hard enough—it’s that you will never stop working. Burnout in freelancing doesn’t feel like a sudden crash; it’s a gradual erosion of enthusiasm, creativity, and patience.

The Fake Commute Ritual

One of the most effective psychological triggers to separate workday from personal evening is the ‘fake commute’. Take a 15-minute walk around your neighborhood immediately before sitting down at 9 AM, and repeat the 15-minute walk when you shut your laptop at 6 PM.

Eliminating Smartphone Work Apps

Remove Slack, Notion, and work email accounts from your mobile device. If an emergency occurs, clients can call your dedicated business phone line. In 99% of cases, that late Friday message can comfortably wait until Monday morning.
